Anonymous: "Don't believe I have no Spanish family etc. it's not offensive, it's a completely normal reaction. Learning a language to native level is almost impossible if you don't do it when you're young so it's just stupid to get offended when people compliment that achievement. Absolute idiocy"

mate. it’s not an achievement that needs praise and surprise by white people. foreigners don’t need to hear it that their english is good, because we know it. we know what it’s like to get mocked for speaking broken english to the point we need to sound perfect to meet your racist standards. and when we finally meet those standards, y’all turn all patronizing and give us a pat in the back for not speaking broken english. we don’t need your backhanded compliments, i know my english is as good as my portuguese and i don’t need the assurance of the british to know that.

once again, you’re sitting there on anon trying to tell a brazilian woman that this shit isn’t offensive when you’re on the completely opposite side of the scenario. by the way after this don’t bother messaging me again because it will just get deleted, you lost your argument and chill by resorting to demeaning/ableist language.

Anonymous: "Tbh it's super narrowminded of you to assume English people don't learn to speak Portuguese. There are plenty of degrees which include Portuguese. That's beside the point. The point is learning another language isn't easy and people are obviously surprised if you can speak one without much accent. I speak Spanish and literally EVERY time I speak with a Spanish person they are surprised that I can speak it so well, don't believe that I've only lived in Spain for 1 year of my life 1/2"

it’s not narrow minded, it’s a reality i’ve had to live with my whole life. i am brazilian and you can ask any brazilian person if any english speaking person that goes there bothers to learn a word of our language and they’ll tell you no. why do you think they gained the nickname “gringo”? it’s common courtesy if you go somewhere foreign that you learn a phrase or two… but because english is the “universal language” why would they bother?

it’s not a compliment. it’s a stereotype to believe all foreigners will speak broken english and that they deserve a pat in the back from you if they don’t.

what i find interesting is that you, a (native) english speaking person, is trying to tell me me this shit isn’t offensive.

i got bored and did my make up. no foundation, just that tiny bb cream sample i got in a beauty box a while back. mac concealer (not pictured for some reason) as that bb cream has no coverage at all, it’s like a moisturiser in my opinion. i like the vitamin c smell though! 🎀

Yeah it’s pretty fucked up how people don’t realize that ideas like oh he doesn’t speak English well = he’s stupid are inherently racist and were pioneered by racists to ensure separation in academic and professional fields. The way you speak English will never be an indicator of your intelligence ever
